A new straw house was born - une nouvelle maison en paille est née

Mai 2019. After years of planning, paper work and nights spent trying to understand how to make a house, we are finally starting! An impressive step.
The winter has been buzy producing more than half a kilometer of beams and posts, screwing by the thousand... friends, comrads and enthousiastic are willing to come and help. So let there be the first straw house in the village. Here we go !

Mai 2019. Apres des années a faire les plans, la paperasse, des nuits a essayer de comprendre comment faire une maison, ca y est, ON COMMENCE! Un pas un peu impressionnant. L'hiver a ete acharne, a produire plus d'un demi kilometre de poutres treillis de toutes sortes et tailles, des vis par milliers... les copains, les camarades et des enthousiastes viennent nous rejoindre. 

Alors c'est parti pour la premiere maison en paille du village. Zaou!

The plans are ready. The architect helped getting a raw sketch of the house with structure calculations and wood sections. Nights spent reading books and sharing and learning from internet forums (special thanks to the Compaillons) helped shaping the final drawings and decisions.

Les plans sont prets. L'architecte a bien aide avec un premier plan, calcule les descentes de charge et les sections de bois. Des nuits et des nuits passees a lire des bouquins, partager et apprendre sur les forums (mention speciale aux compaillons) ont aide a prendre les decisions finales and finir les plans en details.

The "Kabana" and the "Spa" are standing. The last two years we have build two small houses to get more confident. Both made of straw, clay and lime, of a lot of recycled material they provide a confortable space to be and build the house. Solar shower, dry compost toilets, wood stove, a kitchen corner, a large bed and plenty space for tools... We can even host people with let's say a good camp site standard.

La "Cabane" et le "Spa" sont la, construits ces deux dernieres annees, deux petites maisons pour se faire la main, prendre un peu d'assurance. Toutes deux faites de paille d'argile et de chaux, et de beaucoup beaucoup de recyclage, elles nous offrent un soutien confortable pour construire la maison: douche solaire, toilettes seches a composte, poele a bois, coin cuisine, un grand lit et plein de place pour les outils. On peu ainsi accueillir les gens de passage and le confort d'un camping pas trop mal.

Starting making the first post and beam structure. A small team has started preparing the structure, making arms, shaping beams and posts to fit together nicely. A slow process that demands precision and experience. Peter has come to help and his 7 years into the natural building world helps us a lot...

On commence a mettre en forme les premiers poteaux et poutres. Une equipe reduite commence a faire les jambe de force, les assemblages qui doivent s'encastrer gentillement, pas en force mais fermement. Un travail lent qui demande precision et experience. Peter est venu nous donner un serieux coup de main et son experience de 7 ans dans le monde de la construction ecologique est une aide precieuse...

The ground floor starts to stand up. Everybody gets into it and it goes strong. Each day the house gets bigger and bigger!

Les rez de chaussee grandit a vue d'oeil. Tout le monde s'y met et ca avance dur. Chaque jour la maison est de plus en plus grande!

The entire wood structure is lifted by hand and the main beams demands a serious amount of arms and smooth harmony. Measuring again and again, leveling, trying to be as close as possible to the original dimensions, and we are good, not even a centimeter out of the plan on top of the roof.

L'ossature bois est entierement soulevee a la main et les pannes du toit demande une serieuse quantite de bras, de l'harmonie de groupe. On mesure, remesure, on ajuste on fait les niveaux pour rester au plus pret des dimensions originales...et on s'en sort pas mal, moins d'un centimetre d'erreur arrives au fait du toit.

12 people working like crazy doesn't exactly go unnoticed in the peaceful village of Preserje. All generations pass by and the small one get inspired and start to nail and move wood around.

Une equipe de 12 bossant comme des tares, ca passe pas exactement inappercu dans le calme village de Preserje. Toutes les generations passent et les plus jeunes sont inspires et nous aide a planter des clous et deplacer le bois.

The ground floor is well achieved and we set the first lunch in its shadow. 12 people fit into the kitchen! I have printed the master plan so people can have a look where we are going.  The first floor gets to life.

Les rez de chausse est bien avance et on s'y installe pour un premier repas dans son ombre. 12 personne ca psse dans la cuisine! J'ai imprime les plans pour que tous puissent voir ou on va. L'etage superieur commence a monter.

The higher we go the more we need monkeys and people that don't fear uncomfortable positions, but we are lucky, a good majority of the helpers are just abble to screw in what ever position!

Plus on monte, plus on a besoin de singes et de gens qui n'ont pas peur de bosser dans des positions pas tres confortables, mais on a de la chance, une bonne majorite de nos apprentis constructeurs sont capable de visser dans n'importe quel position!

The weather is beautiful and let us go on. In two weeks we have made quite a serious move upward from foundation level.

La meteo est superbe et ca avance. En deux semaines on a produit une sacre quantite de boulot, et on est deja loin du niveau des fondations.

Little home, which is in fact really not so little is standing, getting stronger and stronger, being reinforced everyday.

Next step, finish the wooden walls and start the roof. It seams we will manage to stick on the schedule and have a roof in july.

Notre petite maison qui au final est pas si petite se renforce tous les jours.

La prochaine etape, finir les murs en bois et commencer le toit. Ca ressemble qu'on va reussir a suivre la calendrier et avoir un toit d'ici juillet.
