A new straw house was born - une nouvelle maison en paille est née

Mai 2019. After years of planning, paper work and nights spent trying to understand how to make a house, we are finally starting! An impressive step.
The winter has been buzy producing more than half a kilometer of beams and posts, screwing by the thousand... friends, comrads and enthousiastic are willing to come and help. So let there be the first straw house in the village. Here we go !

Mai 2019.
Zaou!

The plans are ready. The architect helped getting a raw sketch of the house with structure calculations and wood sections. Nights spent reading books and sharing and learning from internet forums (special thanks to the Compaillons) helped shaping the final drawings and decisions.

The "Kabana" and the "Spa" are standing. The last two years we have build two small houses to get more confident. Both made of straw, clay and lime, of a lot of recycled material they provide a confortable space to be and build the house. Solar shower, dry compost toilets, wood stove, a kitchen corner, a large bed and plenty space for tools... We can even host people with let's say a good camp site standard.

Starting making the first post and beam structure. A small team has started preparing the structure, making arms, shaping beams and posts to fit together nicely. A slow process that demands precision and experience. Peter has come to help and his 7 years into the natural building world helps us a lot...

The ground floor starts to stand up. Everybody gets into it and it goes strong. Each day the house gets bigger and bigger!

The entire wood structure is lifted by hand and the main beams demands a serious amount of arms and smooth harmony. Measuring again and again, leveling, trying to be as close as possible to the original dimensions, and we are good, not even a centimeter out of the plan on top of the roof.

12 people working like crazy doesn't exactly go unnoticed in the peaceful village of Preserje. All generations pass by and the small one get inspired and start to nail and move wood around.

The ground floor is well achieved and we set the first lunch in its shadow. 12 people fit into the kitchen! I have printed the master plan so people can have a look where we are going.  The first floor gets to life.

L'etage superieur commence a monter.

The higher we go the more we need monkeys and people that don't fear uncomfortable positions, but we are lucky, a good majority of the helpers are just abble to screw in what ever position!

The weather is beautiful and let us go on. In two weeks we have made quite a serious move upward from foundation level.

Little home, which is in fact really not so little is standing, getting stronger and stronger, being reinforced everyday.

Next step, finish the wooden walls and start the roof. It seams we will manage to stick on the schedule and have a roof in july.

see ya soon !
a plus tard!

Delovna akcija/delavnica

English version bellow

Pasovni temelji so pripravljeni, lojtre in delavci tudi!

Dragi ljubitelji naravne gradnje!

Gradili bomo v dveh fazah, začeli bomo z leseno konstrukcijo, nadaljevali z umestitvijo slamnatih bal in nanosom ometa.

    • Lesena konstrukcija
Delali bomo leseno strukturo z lojtrami, v katero bodo kasneje nameščene bale.
Uporabili bomo minimalno količino velikih tramov, vendar pa ogromno število lojter. Lojtre so lahke, nameščanje preprosto, jih je pa res dosti, kar pomeni dosti šraufanja in zabijanja.
Z nami bo tudi mojster Peter in njegovo znanje o naravni gradnji.

 Lesena konstrukcija

    • Slamnate bale in omet
Dva vikenda v juliju.
Umestili bomo slamnate bale v leseno konstrukcijo in nanesli omet.

Če vas zanima sodelovanje pri delovni akciji s slamnatimi balami in ometom, nam sporočite in vas bomo kasneje obvestili z natančnejšimi informacijami.

Working action / workshop
Building a straw house in Preserje / Vipava valley

Dear friends, comrades, colleges,
our big D day is coming and we are pretty excited about it: we soon start to build our ecological straw house!
We organize a few working actions to get enthusiastic help and share what we know about building such a house.

We will build in two separate phases, first the wooden structure, then the straw bales and plaster.

- The wooden structure.
We plan it in two week-ends: 25-26th of May and 1rst -2nd of June 2019.
The dates might have to move in case of bad weather conditions.
We choose a light wooden structure to fit the straw bales: ladder structure.
A minimal amount of big posts and beams, but a lot of light ladders. Easy to install and not heavy, but plenty of it and a lot of screwing and nailing!
We will have with us Mojster Peter that knows plenty about straw house.

- Straw bales and plaster
Again two weekends in July.
We will define more precisely the dates later.
It depends on the weather and when we manage to finish the roof.
We will place the straw bales in the walls and apply plaster on them.

If you are interested in joining us building our house, please let us know.
No need for previous knowledge of building, just a good amount of energy and enthusiasm.
If you are interested in participating more for the straw and plaster phase, let us know that we can inform you when the dates are set.

For all actions we will provide food and drinks.
We have also possibility (in limited amount) for hosting over night, and plenty space to put a tent.

We have to limit the amount of participant for each action, so let us know as soon as you can if you are interested.

Looking forward to hear from you.
Čopko, Manca and Lev.

Max - Plans of Home made Brick press

Plans and details of Max
the home made brick press

I got several requests of plans for Max.
Here is a little article in this sence.

This is an early plan with the principles, a double lever press:
a long arm is moved by hand and the force is transmitted to a second arm,
moving much less but with much more power and pressing the soil.
Then the brick is pull off from the mold, which is actually the most difficult.

A 1/3 scale model made of wood helped understand the logic and the mini-earth bricks came out nicely compact, even if the wooden frame showed fast signs of tiredness!

First day out for Max and first tests.
There is no welding, only bolts and screws as i don't know how to weld properly. I added some wheels as i realized the beast was close to 100kg...

Max after a couple of bricks. The rope pulling the bricks up, even if it was a strong climbing rope collapsed, and i changed it for a metalic chain. I also reinforced the right part of the frame with some wire as the structure started to bend a lot.

Max apres quelques briques.

Max after the 1000 Bricks. The whole frame is bended, a concrete block supports the left side of the frame where the power is the strongest. But Max made it bravely! And he is still fit for further projects... i have other brick ideas...  one of them includes that i have to make a kiln to cook the bricks... some day...

Here is the latest plan with legend. But i still improvised quite a lot from the plan to actual final press, as i recycled most of the iron, i couldn't choose the dimensions, Max is made mostly from two recycled old iron tables and other pieces i had gathered... The mold i managed to find for exemple is 20cm x 20cm so i decided to make two bricks each round rather than trying to make a smaller mold...

1   The final brick
2   The mold in first and last position: filling up the soil and pulling off the compacted brick.
3   The mold in first pressing position
4   The mold in final pressing position, as close as possible from the end of the frame, where the force is the strongest.
5   The lever activated by hand. I also made a little hook on the frame to block this lever in vertical position.
6   the arm that transmits force of the lever to the second one
7   Second lever, the one actually compressing the bricks.
8   The chain is attached from here to the point 11 to lift the bottom of the mold toward up.
9 and 10    Fixed frame that i had to make much stronger than on the plan. I added triangles to the angles, double some parts.
11   A plate under the bricks is been pulled up, pushing the brick vertically and ready to store and dry.

Hope this was helpfull; here is the video of Max in action! in english:

The SPA - Little straw toilet and shower

The Kabana is standing! A 30m2 first little house,
a workshop for later but for now a nice place to be
and build the House. One thing is still missing: a toilet and shower.
So we decided to do one more rehearshal before building
the house for real. We found a name for it, the SPA.

The idea: a composting toilet with ventilated composting tank below using the natural slope of the ground, and a solar shower, warming up collected rain water. I make a first frame to allow to place the 9 foundations points.

I decide to try and avoid concrete for foundations, burrying large car tires, anchering them with accacia poles and placing steel to attach to the poles, compressing as much as i can with a 5kg hammer and placing a stone for the pole not to be in contact with the ground.

The frame to create a plateform for the SPA. I take the time and pleasure to make mortise and tenons.

I add two challenges to the project: the use of "ladder" frames and a half circle shape. The "ladder" frames because that is the idea for the final house, so better to get a hand on it. A lot of nailing cutting, screwing, but the result is great, light frame, very strong and stiff. The circle, just for beauty!

One more challenge is the weather. Even if the climate is mild in Preserje, december might bring some freshness and the mountains around are getting covered with white... The project needs to move on fast! Friends come on a two days action and the frame moves on fast. Peter being quite experienced in straw building give me some good advices for later.

One more challenge is the mighty BURIA a mountain wind passing by in winter that can come with hurrican force and needs to be respected. Roofs often fly away around here and i go for serious framing. The villagers regularly pass by to see what the crazy french guy is up to this time. When they start to say, "yeah, this will hold boy!" i know i am on the right way! I insert some piece of wood to compensate the curvy accacia poles and get a 20cm straight wall. Then comes the rabbit net that will allow to fill up with straw.

In order for the straw not to be too much in contact with humidity on the lower part of the walls i fill up with a soil/fiber mix. I recycle some wood fiber insulation pannels that i render to small pieces. I also start a new hole in the land. On the outside a inox profil with prevent the lime plaster to be in contact with the wooden floor. For now the weather holds, still soft and above freezing temperatures.

Comes time to finish the roof. A nice little puzzle game, trying to fit some recycled pallet wood planks to a circular shape... with some cutting and patience it goes. Then quite some layers, some felt, some recycled advertising tarpaulin (doubled) and polyethylène layer, and silicone when having to place a screw through. When comes time for preventing the water from entering, it is time to forget a bit about ecological material and use plastics... for my good consciousness most of the material is recycled!

The little SPA is getting there! Filling the walls with straw and starting the outside lime plaster.

An inside we apply the earth plaster, a mix of soil and different fibers (Straw, wood shavings, and wood fiber) I placed a lot of pallets blocks to allow building further inside once the plaster is final.

That's it! After two weeks of pretty intense work, the little SPA is standing, ready to get dry and finish next year. I am very happy with the result, a very good training before the house, and the promiss of going to cozy toilets with the best view!

The winter that had been pretty mild so far seams to make its way. A bit of freezing temperatures coming, but fastly melting. The Lime plaster was already dry enough not to suffer to much from it. It starts to rain like crazy. Getting quite chaotic in the valley down, but actually good for me. The lime plaster will have plenty humidity to make its transformation into stone!

I leave the SPA to its own destiny... will be back in january... i try to leave as many openings on the wall as possible that it can dry. Some details to fix like water making its way under the wall... but the whole wood construction seams to react fine... let's see how my little SPA evolves!

Photo: Peter Malovrh

"The Kozolec is basically a device for drying hay, cereals and other crops, but its shape and various accessories often surpass pure fonctionality, indicating a creative spirit, born of this land which reveals itself in a splendid masterpiece of wood and stone"

France Stele

The kosolec was first described over three hundred years ago by Valvasor in his"The glory of the duchy of Carniola". (1689) The kozolec does not only exist in slovenia, it can be found in the Alps, northern europe, Scandinavia, Russia, mountainous regions of China and Japan, but nowhere are they as widespread and as diverse as in Slovenia, where it has been developped so much that it tends to remind some temples of the Old.

Each region of Slovenia developped its own styled Kozolec. It is especially commun in the eastern parts of the country.

"We can not supress the feeling that is the composition of the stog of Studor there is something which is related to the ancient sites of worship..."

The knowledge behind this wooden constructions is precious. Several hundred years old oak constructions have wistand time with great ease showing no sign of structural fragility. The wood assembly, carving, combining high aesthetic research and structural strentgh is at risk of being lost.

The Kozolec has played a large role in the past centuries, helping keeping a hay of high nutricious value, because well protected from rain and well ventilated. But it has become a too slow link in the chain of modern agriculture. Specialized machines have allowed almost all hay to be converted in silage packed in large plastic bales, loosing the uniqueness of slovenian landscape.

But people are slowly coming to their senses and becoming aware of the invaluable heritage which the kozoloec represents for Slovenia. Toplar are been renovated, sometimes even too well, loosing the lustre of antiquity.
Various recent exemples of renovation show the potential of the Kozolec

House - Virtual Visit

Visite virtuelle de la maison.

A little 2mn Fly into the house as we see it for now...
